Lot Essay
Surrounded by flowers and grasses the viewer looks upon a colourful and light-filled snapshot of Stampa in the summer. In the field, not far from the village, the peasants are busy with the hay harvest. The generous land stretches in lush shades of green as far as the horizon. In the distance, the mountains can be made out through the haze. In the 'Junilandschaft', a similar motif from 1910 (now in the Kunstmuseum Bern) the picture is still composed of strokes of paint applied loosely alongside each other. In this present painting the short brush stroke has already given way to a flat lighter rendering of the image, which is characteristic of this period in Giacometti's work. What is demonstrated here most impressively is the decisive role which colour and light played for the artist.
