Introduced in 1976, the "Nautilus" reference 3700/1 was advertised as "possibly the most exclusive steel watch you can own". With its distinctive octagonal case, reminiscent of a porthole found on maritime vessels, large and robust yet slim and elegant, the model quickly established itself as a classic sports watch suitable for all occasions.
The reference 3700/1 was also available in gold, white gold, steel with gold and very few in platinum, with diamond-set bezel and different dial design. The stainless steel version was in production until 1987 and an estimated 3,250 pieces were made.
The model is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by M. Huber & A. Banbery, 1998, pp. 230 & 231.
