Launched in Basel Fair 1993, reference 5050 was the first Patek Philippe perpetual calendar wristwatch to feature a retrograde date - a remarkable complication where at about midnight of the last day of the month, the date hand automatically disconnects from the drive train and instantly rebound to the first day of the month.
Made until 2002, total production number is estimated at around 1,100 pieces, cased mainly in yellow gold but also available in rose gold, white gold and platinum, all exclusively with an opalescent silvered dial. Generally divided into three series:
- 1st series: applied Roman numerals, railway minute track, moon-phase aperture
- 2nd series, such as the present watch: applied baton hour markers, pearled minute divisions, modified moon-phase display in the form of a subdial printed "Automatic"
- 3rd series (see lot 2990): applied Roman numerals, pearled minute divisions, moon-phase aperture
This model was replaced by reference 5059 which features an "Officer's"-style case with hinged dustcover (see lot 2529 and 2982).
