Peony, member of the Paeonia genus in the flowering plant family Paeoniaceae, is the traditional floral symbol of China. The blossom is also known as 'fuguihua' in Mandarin, meaning 'flower of the riches and honour'. It was declared as the national flower by the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) in 1903 and is ubiquitous in Chinese art.

The famous Chinese city Luoyang has a reputation as a cultivation centre for the peonies, often said to produce the finest in the country.
