Lot Essay

Born in Manchester in 1860, Maude Goodman's world did not allow her to study painting seriously. However, she did manage to obtain some schooling at South Kensington, where she came into contact with Edward Poynter, then director of the Art Schools. After her marriage in 1882, she started to exhibit at the Royal Academy, from which time she began to hone her style, painting scenes of domestic sentimentality.
