Lot Essay

In 1987, the S.S. Egenio C of the Costa Line was given a $25 million refit at the T. Mariotti shipyard in Genoa. At the time, modifications were made to her public areas and accommodations. In the dining room, Roman architect Giuseppe de Lorio oversaw the addition of new art, including panels by Rome-based artists Colacino and Sinisca, with intent of brightening the room and making it more "contemporary".

The preceding two lots, panels from the S.S. Eugenio C by the artists Sinisca and Colacino respectively, combine both painted and chased details on the surfaces to bring their subjects to life. The colors involve forest greens, deep, earthy maroons, and amber accents. There is a melancholy to the Sinisca panels versus the more upbeat tones of the Colacinos. The unpainted portions of the reflective surface bring the viewer into the panels and make them a part of the imagery.
