COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
R.C.R. Barder, The Georgian Bracket Clock 1714-1830, Woodbridge, 1999, p.97, plate IV/17
John Stephen Rimbault is recorded in Great St Andrews Street, London between 1744 and 1785 and appears to have specialised in musical and automaton clocks. The present clock has a similar case design and mounts found on other table clocks by Rimbault. The layout of the dial and the use of dot markers to the corners of the date square can also be seen on similar clocks by him. A quarter chiming clock with automata by Rimbault that includes these features is illustrated in R.C.R. Barder (p.97, plate IV/17). Further comparable clocks by Rimbault include: a brass-mounted and ebonised quarter chiming table clock sold, Christie's London, Important Clocks, 5 July 2006, lot 119; a brass-mounted and ebonised striking and musical automaton table clock sold, Christie's Amsterdam, The P.C.
