The caddy top surmounted by three giltwood flaming urn finials, brass capped pilasters to each corner of the hood, above a rectangular moulded trunk door and plinth base with hinged door, the marquetry front inlaid with foliage, a flower vase, putti and songbirds within a geometrical border, the 30.5 cm. (12 in.) square brass dial with leaf engraved border the upper spandrels engraved with acanthus and with two silvered subsidiary rings for regulation and Strike/Silent (not connected to movement) and lower cherub mask spandrels to silvered chapter ring signed Clau Du Chesne/Londini Fecit, matted and engraved centre with ringed winding holes, silvered seconds ring and date aperture, pierced blued steel hands, the month going movement with five ringed pillars, pull quarter repeat on five bells and hour strike on one bell above; long (1¼ seconds) pendulum with engraved mock pendulum bob; later crank key; door key

Lot Essay

Claude Du Chesne or Duchesne, a Huguenot who fled Paris, is recorded working in London on Dean Street - St. Ann Soho from circa 1690 he was Free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1693 and died circa 1730.

There is an old label to the inside of the door with German text stating this clock was bought by Landschaftssyndikus Josef Fritsch zu Frankenstein at an auction of Kamenz monastery (near Dresden) around 1830-1840.

Kamenz Monastery was supressed due to the secularization decree of King Friedrich Wilhelm III in 1810.
