Lot Essay

After a successful career in the Antiquities and Impressionist Picture departments at Sotheby's, Bruce Chatwin established himself as a travel writer. His passion for travelling escalated during his twenties after a visit to Sudan, where he became fascinated with nomads and in some respects adopted their way of life. Chatwin launched his literary career by working as a journalist for the Sunday Times Magazine. He went on to write a number of books based on his travels, including 'In Patagonia' which won the 1977 Hawthornden prize and the E.M. Forster award. He wrote countless other highly regarded travel books up until his death in 1989.
