Lot Essay

Franz Richard Unterberger was born into an artistic family in 1860 and received his artistic training at the Munich Academy. During the 1860s, after studying at the Düsseldorf Academy - the leading school of landscape painting at the time - Unterberger travelled extensively. During his trip to Naples and Southern Italy the artist seems to have been attracted to the picturesque scenes and people from this region. His atttempts to capture on canvas the light atmosphere and warm climate of the region eventually made him one of the most famous landscape painters of this naturalistic genre. By the 1880s Unterberger exhibited extensively throughout Europe and had become internationally famous.
