Lot Essay

Frederick Goodall travelled to Egypt on two occasions, in 1858 and again in 1870, both times travelling and camping with Bedouins. The Egyptian theme became a prominent one in his work and Goodall strived to convey detail in his paintings as accurately as possible. Goodall received high praise for his works and from an early age showed great talent. His first commision, which consisted of 6 watercolours was exhibited at the Royal Academy when Goodall was only 16 years old. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 27 times between 1838 and 1859 and was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1852. He earned a small fortune from his paintings and counted the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) and Charles Dickens among his friends.
