Lot Essay
This pair was formerly thought to be the work of the French artist Sebastiaen Leclerc II (1676-1763), but nothing strictly comparable in his oeuvre appears to be known. Painted with admirable finesse, and datable to circa 1700, they seem closer stylistically to Matthys Schoevaerdts or Joseph van Bredael, both of whom were ultimately indebted to Jan Breughel the Elder.
