Lot Essay

The marble is derivative of the Nymph with a Shell in the Louvre which was first recorded in 1638 as being in the Villa Borghese. It was purchased by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1807. See Haskell and Penny, Taste and the Antique p.281 No. 67.
