Of tapering cylindrical form with convex mouth and recessed, circular, slightly convex foot surrounded by a footrim, painted in underglaze blue with a continuous scene of an eight-strong embassy on horseback greeting a figure at a gate, apocryphal Qianlong four-character mark in underglaze blue, amethyst stopper with gilt-metal collar

Lot Essay

Blue and white snuff bottles were not made in large quantities before the end of the 18th century, despite the very long tradition of such wares at Jingdezhen. They soon grew in popularity, however, to become one of the standard types for the second half of the dynasty as the habit spread to the entire nation. Apocryphal reign marks on blue and white porcelain snuff bottles arise out of the mid-Qing interest in collecting old snuff bottles, whether for use or simply as art objects.
