Lot Essay

This bottle is typical in every way of the small group of bottles made for and almost certainly at the Court. It is of the yellow material beloved by the Qing emperors, has the typical small mask handles of Court style, and is decorated with bands of archaistic design and rope borders all taken from the ancient bronze culture and typical of Courtly production. It is also of a modified meiping form, which was so popular on eighteenth-century Imperial bottles. For other Palace jade bottles, see Moss, Graham, Tsang, The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle. The J & J Collection, Vol. 1, nos. 34-37, and Moss, Graham, Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, Vol. I, Jade, nos. 75-85, 94 and 95, 99- 105.
