GERVASE MARKHAM
Markhams Maister-Peece. Or What doth a Horse-man lacke. London: printed by Nicholas Okes ... to be sold by Arthur Iohnson, 1610. 2 parts in one volume, 4°, title to the second part with woodcut device, woodcut illustrations including 3 full-page cuts of a horse on Ee4r (with folding flap), Ff1v and Ff2v, and cuts of 'The Farriers principall instruments' on Vvv2 verso (lacks front blank, folding woodcut and final leaf Vvv4, title soiled and frayed, occasional soiling elsewhere, quires Ggg-Lll heavily wormed at inner margin and with some laminated repairs, quires G-X lightly wormed at margin, quires C, D and Aa waterstained), modern calf.
THE RARE FIRST EDITION, one of two issues, the other with the name William Welby instead of Arthur Johnson in the imprint. "Judged by modern standards this book is scientifically worthless, but it has unique interest as the first veterinary manual in English to enjoy a reputation as the standard work on the subject, a position which it occupied for more than two centuries" (Poynter). ESTC records two copies of this issue at the BL and Wellcome Institute, both lack the folding woodcut, and the BL copy lacks a large number of leaves. Three copies of the William Welby issue are recorded at the Bodleian (imperfect), Folger and Huntington libraries. Poynter 20.1; STC 17376.5.
