London: William Sheares, 1635. 4 parts in one volume, 4°, two part titles, woodcut illustrations (title and preliminaries with short but crudely-repaired marginal tear, title also creased at lower corner, waterstaining to quires D, E, G and Ee, Ee1 torn across and crudely-repaired on verso, affecting woodcuts both recto and verso, the same leaf shaved at upper margin, without the initial blank), limp vellum (crinkled, a reimboitage?). Provenance: Bibliotheca Piscatoria Lynniana (label).
Second edition, one of two issues, the other having Henry Taunton in the imprint as publisher. The two books which comprise The English Husbandman draw on the work of Sir Hugh Platt and Leonard Mascall, dealing respectively with ploughing and sowing, and the planting and grafting of fruit trees with advice on the layout of gardens and a treatise on forestry. The appendix, entitled 'The Pleasures of Princes', contains two short tracts, one on the art of angling, the other on the care of the fighting-cock. The former is a prose paraphrase of John Dennys' poem The Secrets of Angling (1613), while the tract on the fighting-cock is entirely original. Poynter 21.2; Westwood & Satchell p. 144; STC 17357.
