London: printed by [Adam Islip? for] Thomas Wight and Bonham Norton, 1598. 4°, black letter, woodcut interlace title border, 8-line woodcut foliated initials (title slightly soiled and creased, early quires wormed at outer margin), contemporary calf gilt, covers with central lozenge and owner's initials "W P" enclosed by blind and gilt fillets, spine panels with repeated gilt ornament and later paper label, gilt edges with title inscribed in manuscript (extremities worn, ties lacking). Provenance: W P (binding) -- Henry Cunliffe (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION OF THE EARLIEST TREATISE ON ENGLISH FOREST LAWS. The work begins with definitions of "Forrest", "Chase", "Parke" and "Warren". Chapter 2 deals with the royal prerogative, chapter 4 with the differences between beasts of venerie and the beasts of chase or warren, chapter 5 with venison, chapter 16 "Of keeping of Dogges within a forrest" and chapter 18 "Of Hawking and Hunting".
