JACQUES DE SOLLEYSEL

The Compleat Horseman ... made English from the eighth edition of the original by Sir William Hope. London: R. Bonwick, J. Tonson [and others], 1717. 2 parts in one volume, 2°, engraved frontispiece portrait, 6 folding engraved plates (some creasing of plates, one plate cleanly torn, several others waterstained at edges, some waterstaining to text margins, L1r and L4v slightly soiled, K4r with small ink stain effacing a few letters), contemporary panelled calf (spine repaired at head and chipped at foot, endpapers renewed). Provenance: John Brown (early inscription on title).

Second folio edition in English. Sir William Hope's translation of Le parfait mareschal (Paris, 1664) had first appeared, in folio, in 1696. Two octavo editions were also published in 1717, indicating that its popularity was still great at the beginning of the Hanoverian age. The translator contributed a supplement to the first part. Huth p. 22; Mellon/Podeschi 41.
