I & VII and 30 plates by and after Alken, Brooke, Dighton, Rowlandson and others (lightly spotted and light marginal soiling, a few leaves lightly browned), original pink, yellow or tan printed wrappers, partly unopened and partly uncut (wrappers of pts.V, VII and VIII laid down, new endpapers in pts. V & VIII, pts. XII & XIV lack original wrappers, all parts sunfaded and a little soiled), in two crimson morocco boxes.
FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL MONTHLY PARTS. The plates include Epsom Races, Sparring at the Fives Court, Tattersalls, Road to a Fight, A Private Turn-up, Easter Hunt, and Ascot Races. Abbey Life 280: "From a bibliographical point of view, one of the most complicated and bewildering books ever published ...."; Tooley 198: "an imitation of Egan's Life in London. Though not the equal of the latter it has considerable merit". (14)
