Lot Essay

The overall design and decorative elements in this chest suggest it was possibly made in Newfoundland by an outport craftsman. These men built their boats, houses and furniture, often including design elements imported from Ireland where many Newfoundland settlers originated.Teak was common. See W. Peddle The Traditional Furniture of Outport Newfoundland, 1983.
