Lot Essay

In 1829, Cox and his family took lodgings at Gravesend. Mrs Cox's sister, Mrs Hills, occupied apartments in the same street, and several drawings of Gravesend and the River Thames resulted from this stay. Cox exhibited views of Shakespeare's Cliff at the Old Water Colour Society in 1830 and 1833, nos. 187 and 399. Another watercolour of this subject is in the British Museum.
