Dear Client,
As the new head of North American sales for the wine department at Christie's, it is my great pleasure to welcome you the opening sale of the fall season in New York. Christie's has been hard at work in recent months, working to secure exceptional consignments of the world's finest and most rare wines from some of the most impressive and meticulously maintained collections in the world.
The initial impression of this sale is the enormous strength in the wines of the best that the Médoc has to offer, including multiple cases of the region's top wines in the best vintages. From Pauillac there are full cases of Château Lafite-Rothschild from 1982, 1983, 1987, 1990 and 1996, cases of Château Latour from 1990 and cases and imperials from 1996, a tantalizing wealth of the legendary 1986 Château Mouton-Rothschild as well as the lovely 1990, full cases of Château Margaux 1986, 1990, 1996 and a delightful range of Haut Brion from top vintages like 1982, 1986, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1998, and 2000 among many others as well as rare old wines from the cellars of Mähler-Besse, including a case of the 1934 Château Margaux.
The second growths that out-perform their category are also available in force, notably wine from the Léoville-Las-Cases, Pichon Lalande, Pichon Baron, Cos d'Estournel, Ducru-Beaucaillou and others. These are wines that offer a fantastic experience to the value-seeking bidder.
The breadth of the sale is not limited to these gems, however. There is an equally illustrious array from the right bank, including multiple vintages of Pétrus, Ausone, and Cheval Blanc, and the Bordeaux offer is rounded out by Yquem in bottles and in rare large formats, including a full case of 1975, magnums of the exquisite 1983, three imperials of the 1988 vintage which are beginning to drink at their full potential as well as a wealth of the lush, easy-to-love 1990 Yquem.
Lovers of Burgundy will revel in the gems from top producers, such as Romanée-Conti 2002 in its original wood case, a case of the DRC Romanée-Saint-Vivant 1989, La Tâche 2000 as well as cases of Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Bèze in multiple vintages; Musigny and Bonnes Mares from de Vogüé, cases of multiple vintages of the Clos de la Roche from Dujac and others.
Nor have we committed the error of neglecting the wines of the New World. California comes into play with full cases of Colgin, Araujo Eisele, Montelena, Ridge, Marcassin, and many others, including Harlan and Screaming Eagle.
Thank you for joining us for the auction of these wonderful wines. It truly represents a golden opportunity for both the experienced collector seeking to round out their collections and wine lovers new to the thrill of the chase.
Cheers,
Charles Curtis MW
