The waisted brush handle encircled by a triple-ribbed band, the handle and brush finely carved through black and red layers with a ruyi pattern, with three further small ruyi heads on the crown-like tip and small T-scrolls in a band above the bristles

A similarly shaped and carved brush and cover dated to the 15th century in The Tokugawa Art Museum, is illustrated in Karamono: Imported Lacquerwork--Chinese, Korean and Ryukyuan (Okinawa), Nagoya, Japan, 1997, p. 17, no. 16.
