A Lacquer Writing Box (Suzuribako) and Matching Document Box (Bunko)

Each boldly decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e with hirame against a glossy roiro-nuri ground with pine trees, the rough bark of the trees and the needles embellished with characters of a poem in cursive script (ashide) inlaid in pewter, the underside of the lid of the writing box designed with an oxcart among autumn grasses and characters from the poem in inlaid pewter, the interior of the writing box with a continuation of the autumn grass design and fitted with a circular gilded copper water dropper incised with bush clover and a rectangular inkstone, underside of the document box and the base lacquered with gold vines
