Lot Essay

A related pair of drawings possibly from the studio of Lamqua were offered at Christie's New York, 2 December 1993, lots 129 and 130, these related drawings also appear in Carl Crossman's book 'The China Trade' Antique Collector's Club, 1991, p. 172, col. pls. 56 and 57.
The first of the paintings depicts the Emperor (Jiajing or Daoguang) enthroned in state under the canopy of a grand pavilion, probably within the Summer Palace (Yuan Ming Yuan), and the second painting depicts the Empress seated within a square pavilion within the Summer Palace, surrounded by lady attendants and approaching tribute bearers.
