The serpentine fleur de pêcher marble top above two drawers inlaid sans traverse with flowers and set with a foliate-cast pierced frame and handles, the sides each with conforming frame and marquetry, the angles headed by scrolling-acanthus clasps, on cabriole legs with rocaille sabots, the reverse of the top escutcheon stamped F. LINKE L796 and the right mount bearing the inscription Linke
35¾ in. (91 cm.) high; 38 in. (96.5 cm.) wide; 24 in. (61 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

The mounts and shape of the present lot relate closely to a Japanese lacquered commode by the celebrated ébéniste Joseph Baumhauer (d. 1772), now in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (illustrated P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siécle, Paris, 1989, p. 453).

An identically-mounted commode by Linke, with Japanese lacquered panels rather than bois de bout marquetry as here, was sold Sotheby's London, 28 February 1997, lot 227 (£78,500).
