Lot Essay

Lady Caroline Brydges was the eldest child of Sir Henry Brydges (1707/8-1771), 2nd Duke of Chandos, and his first wife, Lady Mary Bruce (c.1710-1738), daughter of Charles Bruce, 4th Earl of Elgin and Lady Anne Saville. Lady Caroline married James Leigh (c.1725-1774) of Adlestrop, Gloucestershire, son of William Leigh (1691-1757), in 1755. They had one son, James Henry Leigh (1765-1823). The present picture would appear to date to the early 1770s.
