Lot Essay

In 1712, following ten years of war, the English began to negotiate peace with France, one of their stipulations being that James Stuart, the Old Pretender (1688-1766), and his exiled court should leave France. Mary of Modena commissioned Belle to paint a three-quarter-length portrait of her son to provide a prototype for full and bust-length copies (Government Art Collection, London, no. 3534).
