Lot Essay

The present lot is to be dated to circa 1660-1670, when the artist gradually came under the influence of Karel Dujardin. See Meesterlijk Vee, exhibition catalogue, Dordrecht/Leeuwarden 1988-1989, p. 201.
The composition is based on Nicolaes Berchem's picture of 1655 in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Brunswick, inv. no. 793 (P. Sutton, Masters of 17th Century Landscape Painting, exhibition catalogue 1987, no. 8, plate 60).
