The label pasted over the cartouche reading BHB London 1811, made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and two steel axis pins, the equatorial graduated in degrees, labelled by 10°, and hours labelled twice in Roman numberals, the ecliptic graduated in degrees, labelled by 10° and the symbols of the Zodiac, ungraduated prime meridian labelled Meridian of London, tropics and polar circles shown and labelled, latitude line 80°-0°-80° along 165° west graduated and labelled by 10°, continents and countries coloured in outline, North coast of Canada not shown, Australia named New Holland with New South Wales separately coloured pink, Tasmania shown as an Island and named Dimens L^d, New Zealand shown but not Antarctic lands, Antipodes of London marked, journeys of Anson and Cook marked, showing Owhyhee Here C.Cook was killed 14 Feb.^y 1779 (slight abrasions and loss to varnish). In original red-edged spherical fishskin-covered case with single hinge and two brass clasps, the interior laid with two sets of twelve celestial engraved half-gores and polar calottes, the equatorial on both hemispheres graduated but only labelled on the Northern, the ecliptic coloured red, graduated and labelled by 10° and with the symbols of the Zodiac, the stars depicted to four orders of magnitude (the Southern hemisphere with 1½in. split, one clasp not closing, third clasp missing).

Lot Essay

The italic letters BHB (of whom we can find no previous record) are on a small printed label pasted over the upper part of the cartouche, leaving the words LONDON 1811 visible, which was the common practice of retailers. However, comparison with other pocket globes at the British Library show that it is certainly by Lane.
