An English 3-inch pocket globe
Newton & Son, 19th century
The cartouche NEWTON'S New & Improved TERRESTRIAL GLOBE [...] Newton & Son LONDON (faded), made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and two axis pins, graduated equatorial numbered by 10°, graduated ecliptic numbered by 10° and marked with the symbols of the Zodiac, tropics and polar circles shown and labelled, meridian of London given, voyages of Cook marked, Australia named as such along with New Holland and New South Wales, Tasmania as an island named Diemens Ld, New Zealand and Antipodes of London shown, the Antarctic showing Enderby's L[and], Peter 1st L[and] and Alexander 1st L[and], the Great Wall shown, California as a peninsula (fading, stains, few manuscript retouchings). In original case with brass clasp (worn and stained), the interior celestial gores over-painted in black (some paint has rubbed onto the globe at the poles).
