Lot Essay

The present work was hanging at the Drummond family home at Moulsford in Berkshire until the death of the artist's widow, Margaret, in 1988. Malcolm Drummond had painted for his own enjoyment and it was Margaret who had encouraged him to finish his paintings and organised exhibitions of his work. She was also responsible for raising her husband's profile after his death.

The present canvas is laid down on a straw-board backing, the same technique that the artist used for his portrait of Charles Ginner, in the collection of Southampton Art Gallery (private correspondence, 2005).
