Lot Essay

The Sound of Sleat (pronounced 'slate') is a body of water separating the Isle of Skye from the west coast of the Scottish mainland. Its wild and spectacular scenery have inspired many artists over the years, with the mountains of Skye running straight down to the sea where a fast tidal race makes the sound a challenge to small craft.
