MacLauchlan Milne's works are very much in the tradition of the Colourists. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and was much influenced by his time spent in France, both during the First World War and afterwards with his French wife. He worked alongside Cadell and Peploe and his paintings reflect their manner both in subject matter and palette. The present work, featuring a vase filled with summer flowers, incorporates the edge of some green shutters typical of the Mediterranean, immediately transporting the viewer to the South of France where the artist spent much of his life.
