Lot Essay
This watercolour by the Utrecht artist Reinier Craeyvanger is very impressive because of its enormous size. This large watercolour possibly shows the influence of Jan Willem Pieneman (1799-1853) since Craeyvanger studied at the Amsterdam Academy under Pieneman who is famous for his gigantic pictures. Craeyvanger thoroughly copied Old Masters. His favourite subjects were townviews and historical genre pictures. Craeyvanger was a member of the artist society 'Kunstliefde' in Utrecht, where he learned the art of drawing during nightly studies. The woman with the basket on the left side of the present lot is a typical example of a 'standje' (pose) drawn at 'Kunstliefde'. Watercolours in this unprecedented enormous size are rare.
