Arabic manuscript on paper, 316ff. plus 5 fly-leaves, each folio with 15ll. of neat black naskh, the first, middle and last line in large gold or blue script and the remainder in narrower panels with floral illumination on each side, gold roundel verse markers, gold and polychrome illuminated round and drop-shaped marginal medallions, sura headings in black-outlined gold thuluth on a ground of floral scrolls, opening folio with dense gold and polychrome illumination, colophon with possibly later illumination below signed Asadullah ibn Muhammad al-Kashani and dated 20 Dhu'l Hijja 962, with added Ottoman prayers at the end of the manuscript, areas of light staining mostly restricted to the margins, in contemporaneous and possibly original binding of black morocco with flap and decorated with large panels of stamped and tooled gilded decoration finely worked with arabesques and scrolls, the doublures decorated with decoupé central medallion, spandrels and borders over cobalt and gold ground, doublures worn

Lot Essay

Asadullah ibn Muhammad al-Kashani is only known by two other Qur'ans copied by him, which are dated AH 960 (1552-53 AD) and AH 965 (1558-59 AD) (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va Asar-e Khosh-Nevisan, Vol. IV, Tehran, 1358 sh., p. 34).
