Hadith, Arabic and Persian manuscript on paper, 9ff. plus 2 fly-leaves, each folio with 7-9ll. of black naskh all contained in gold-sprinkled panels with gold interlinear and intercolumnar rules, most folios with two such panels with 4ll. of diagonal nasta'liq, text laid down between gold and polychrome rules on blue marbled paper, opening folio with gold and polychrome illuminated panel and the first bifolio with lines of nasta'liq running straight across the text panel, colophon signed Salim in Mashhad and dated 986, wormholing, in purple cloth boards with red morocco spine and spandrels signed Yusuf Sahaf 'Ali

Lot Essay

Salim of Nishapur is recorded as being a pupil of Shah Mahmud and a master in nasta'liq, particularly when writing in colours. He lived in Mashhad and died circa AH 990 (1582-83 AD). His recorded works are dated between AH 961 (1554-55 AD) and AH 976 (1568-69 AD) (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va Asar-e Khosh-Nevisan, Vol. I, Tehran, 1345 sh, pp. 282-4).
