Persian manuscript on gold-sprinkled paper, 52ff. plus 1 fly-leaf, each with 12ll. of neat black nasta'liq arranged in two columns with double gold intercolumnar rule, titles in gold nasta'liq, opening folio with gold and polychrome illuminated headpiece, the second folio from the beginning and end with alternating horizontal and diagonal lines of text, colophon signed Baba Shah al-Isfahani and dated the end of Dhu'l Hijja 979, folios laid down between gold and blue rules and pink minor borders on cream margins, one miniature, small areas of waterstaining mainly restricted to the margins, with elegant lacquer binding with mirrored black cloudbands issuing animal heads on a gold ground with dense scrolling and flowering vine, the doublures with black central cartouche, spandrels and border filled with delicate floral designs against a green ground

Lot Essay

Baba Shah al-Isfahani was a 16th century nasta'liq scribe who died in AH 996/1588 AD. He was praised by many as being a master of the style, and the author of the Adab al-Mashq (often wrongly attributed to Mir 'Imad). His recorded works are dated between AH 977/1569-70 AD and AH 994/1586-87 AD (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va Asar-e Khosh-Nevisan, Vol. I, Teheran, 1345 sh, pp. 85-91).
