Lot Essay

'Abdullah Bukhari (who flourished between 1725-50) was one of the two great eighteenth century Turkish painters. Like his contemporary, Levni, he painted many individual scenes for the albums of collectors, specializing particularly in flowers and single female figures. However erotica was much in vogue and was also considered perfectly acceptable subject matter. For similar paintings sold in these Rooms see 18 October 1994 and 19 October 1993, lot 101.
