Lot Essay
Identical tiles with this extraordinarily intense red bole, feathery saz leaves and evanescent Chinese clouds are located in the domed ante-room to the Has Oda of Murad III (1579) at the Topkapi Saray Palace (J.M. Rogers, (ed.): The Topkapi Saray Museum, Architecture, Boston, 1988, p.32, fig. 62-64). The mosque of Piyale Pasha (c. 1573) is also known to have close examples (E. Atil, The Age of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, New York, 1987, p. 281, ill. 209). A large panel of similar tiles is in the Gulbenkian Collection (Calouste Gulbenkian Museum Catalogue, Lisbon, 1982, no.119, p.191) and further examples can be found in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Louvre, the Hetjens Museum, Düsseldorf and the Kustgewerbe Museum in Cologne. A single tile from the same series is in a private collection in Bonn (Y. Petsopoulos, Tulips, Arabesques & Turbans, exhibition catalogue, London, 1982, p.95, fig.103).
Two tiles of this design and an important composite panel were sold from the Theodor Sehmer Collection in these Rooms, 27 April 2004, lots 238 and 338 while further examples from a French collection were sold at Christie's, Paris, 7 March 2007, lots 117 and 121.
