THE DIAL SIGNED SAM ROBINSON, WELL CLOSE SQUARE, LONDON, MID-18TH CENTURY
With later pointed gilt finials above an arched glazed door revealing a brass and pewter clock face with with seasonal spandrels to silvered chapter ring with fleur-de-lys half hour markers, matted center with scroll engraving around the date aperture and with subsidiary seconds ring, signed on a plaque in the arch SAM ROBINSON WELL CLOSE SQUARE LONDON and with strike/silent lever between, the eight day five pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike on bell, the case decorated throughout with Chinoiserie vignettes and with an arched door having an applied paper label 'WALL & SON CLOCK AND WATCHMAKERS, KING STREET, RICHMOND, SURREY', and remains of a chalk inscription 'M. ROBINS ... WELL ... CLO..', the skirting board later, the decoration refreshed, the works probably associated

Lot Essay

Samuel Robinson became free of the Clockmakers Company in 1785.

The case itself has the label of Wall & Son of King Street, Richmond, Surrey, clock and watchmakers. William Wall is recorded as a watchmaker before 1772 and Wall & Wall are recorded in the Clockmakers Company circa 1800.
