Also known as Cupid Restrained, the present subject was popularized by numerous artists in the 19th century. While this group was considered to be an 'original subject' or interpretation by the artist, other compositions more frequently show Venus disarming Cupid by depriving him of his quiver or Minerva clipping the putto's wings.

Though little is known about Luigi Gallandt and his oeuvre, it is interesting to note that a marble of the same subject, possibly the present marble, was sold for $710 in a 1905 American Art Association auction of the J.W. Kauffman collection of fine art and sculpture.
