Lot Essay

Given the size and scale of this splendid composition, it seems highly likely that it was one of Schetky's three Royal Academy exhibits of 1848 (No. 341, 'Dutch men-o'war on the coast of Holland - olden time'). During his long career spanning over seventy years, Schetky exhibited three 'olden time' works depicting Dutch men-o'war, each of which represented the Dutch fleet in different form.
