CIRCA 1735, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARK
Decorated in the manner of the Seuter workshop with a vignette of chinoiserie figures by pedestals and fences, surrounded by four lesser vignettes within a gilt line border, slight patches of wear to centre
8 7/8 in. (22.6 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

Although normally associated with the Seuter and Aufenwerth workshops in Augsburg, Goldchinesen decoration was also carried out in the Meissen factory. In 1727 Höroldt's own studio started to apply gold decoration. The current plate with its precisely executed chinoiserie scenes has drawn direct inspiration from the Schulz Codex. The panel depicting a kneeling figure in prayer before a deity can clearly be seen to have been taken from the Codex on sheet no. 54.
