Lot Essay

The triumphal arched fire-dogs celebrate 'Love's triumph' with 'picturesque' foliated and scalloped cartouches evoking parks and inhabited by courting 'Italian musicians'. Inspired by the Commedia dell'arte, the theatric figures of Mezzotin and his companion are costumed in the manner of one of Jean de Jullienne's 1731 engraving after Jean-Antoine Watteau.
