Lot Essay

Jacob Salomonsz. van Ruysdael was the son of the landscape painter Salomon Jacobsz. van Ruysdael and is thought to have studied under his father alongside his more famous cousin Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael. He is likely to have worked in his father's studio, and his stylistic dependence on his father's work shows clearly in his pictures, as noted by Walther Bernt - 'His forest landscapes are...related to his father's work, but may be recognised by the somewhat prominent figures of fallow-brown cows and sheep'.
