Lot Essay

Judging from his costume, the sitter was probably an echevin, a member of the Council of Paris. We are grateful to Dr. Nicolas Sainte Fare Garnot of the Musée Jacquemart-André, Paris, for his help in cataloguing this lot (verbal communication, 17 June 2008).
