Lot Essay

The painting is signed and wrongly dated on a later date by the artist The actual date of the painting is 1906. The work is the only surviving fragment of the large painting "Het Tranenlandschap", a composition inspired by Vergilius and made under the influence by Courbet. When the piece was refused for the Concours Godecharle Brusselmans was so furious he torn the piece, an act he later regretted very much.
