PETRUS LOMBARDUS (c. 1100-1160). Glossa in epistolas Pauli. [Esslingen: Conrad Fyner, not after 8 September 1473].
Royal 2° (405 x 290mm). Collation: [1-410 512 6-910 10-118 12-2010 218]. 206 leaves. 58 lines, double column, shoulder notes. Type: 1:96G. Contemporary south German decoration: opening historiated initial on a gold ground within fictive frame, foliate extensions with gold flowers and disks, major initials in colours, 2-4-line initials and paragraph marks alternating in red or blue, opening incipit supplied in red, ?signed by rubricator Martinus at end. (Dampstaining, heavier at beginning, some minor worming.) Modern calf calf over marbled boards. Provenance: Würzburg, Carmelite Convent of St. Barbara (ownership inscription on first leaf) -- Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from A.S.W Rosenbach, Philadelphia, 4 May 1943; donated to St. Mary's of the Barrens, Perryville, Missouri, 1943 (sale 14 December 2001, lot 81).
FIRST EDITION, printed at the first press in Esslingen, the only one active in the 15th century and then only between 1473 and 1477, after which Fyner established the first printing shop in Urach. A dozen editions previously given to Fyner at Esslingen have subsequently been assigned to Eggestein at Strassburg. The last two gatherings (2010 and 218) in this copy (and in the New York Public Library copy) differ slightly from the collation listed in BMC and BSB-Ink. (v8 and x10). A TALL COPY.
